Confident

Board games, and I include tabletop games, card games etc. in that, come in various guises, they can be mad, manic, frantic fun, mentally challenging, more strategic thinking sedate enjoyment, or ones that even put physical skills to the test. They all have their own unique qualities and I love them. Everybody has their favourites. Confident? has none of those things that I just mentioned – it is a different type of game that requires no general knowledge, no manic race around a board, no jumping around the room trying to complete challenges and no brain-teasing logic puzzles to deduce. All player’s need is the ability to guess.

Confident? is a guess-a-range party game where you just need to take an educated (or even lucky) guess as to what the answer could be. Could you guess, within a range, how many slices of bread there are in an average sliced loaf? You’re already thinking about it, aren’t you? What about how many countries share a land border with France? The good thing about Confident? is that you don’t have to give an altogether spot-on answer – for example, depending on what bread your buy and thickness the answer is never going to 100% accurate so for your answer you could suggest a range of 18-22 and score a point if the answer on the card is within that range, whilst the player with the answer in the narrowest range gets 3 points. Land borders with France, well that does have a conclusive answer (I’m not going to tell you how many in case you play the game and get that question), but again you don’t have to get the exact number, just within a range such as 2-4 (and no, the answer isn’t within that range).

Confident is a game for 2-30 players, aged 11+. It has an average playing time of around 30 minutes. It can either be played as a 2-6 player family game, or as a party game with up to 30 players.

Confident

As with all games, there are some things to do before play can begin. It’s not difficult and only takes a few seconds. Just hand each player or team a wipeable answer board and a drywipe pen. Each player or team writes their name or team name on their answer board and voilà, the game is ready to play.

To play Confident, any player can read out a question. All players answer the question at the same time by writing their answer on their answer board (a range of numbers such as 18-23) and the difference between the two numbers (which in this case would be 5). But the answer isn’t an exact answer, you guess within a range where you think the answer lies. You can have a large range if not too sure, but if you are feeling confident or even know the answer then you go for a smaller range. If you are correct with your range of answer, the smaller difference in the range wins you more points. Everybody reveals their answer board at the same time and then the correct answer is revealed. If this answer falls in any of the ranges of the answer boards players will get a point, the player with the smallest range will get 3 points. The first to 15 points is the winner.

Confident

But you don’t just 1 or 3 points for getting the answer within range, you also have three ‘Confidence Boosts’ per player or team (think Who Wants to be a Millionaire lifelines) to help you on your way to that 15 point winning line. The Confidence Boosts are:

  • COPY – you can just copy the answer of the person who you think is most likely to have the answer correct.
  • SWAP – you get to be a bit of a puppet-master and swap two of your opponent’s cards over.
  • DOUBLE – for when you’re super confident about your answer so can score 6 points instead of the usual three for having the best answer with the smallest range.

Overall, Confident? is an excellent fun game for family game nights, Christmas, parties or any gathering of family and friends. It is so easy to play that the whole family can join in as the answers are all numbers and don’t have to exact, guesswork is key (albeit an educated guess). I thoroughly enjoyed playing Confident.

The questions are mostly very well pitched for all age groups, and I would say that most children over the age of 11 could have a good go at them. As a family, we all had fun and laughs playing.
