Pub Quiz

Cheatwell’s Host You Own Pub Quiz has everything you need to recreate a classic pub quiz trivia night for two teams of players, a head-to-head battle of pub quizzers. And all in the comfort of your own home (and far less expense). This game comes with a massive 2000 questions on four decks of pub quiz cards (200 double-sided cards) covering 8 popular trivia topics. But it doesn’t stop there, it also has a pair of flip score charts to keep track of who is winning (or losing), two pencils, an answer pad, and a rules/answer booklet. The materials are sturdy and well-made, ensuring that the game can withstand the excitement of many quiz nights to come.

Unlike a quiz night in a pub that is set up for several quiz teams, Host Your Own Pub Quiz is a game for 2 sets of teams. It is played over 8 rounds with 40 questions. Both teams answer the questions at the same time, writing down their answers on their answer sheet (a pad is included with the game). The team with the highest score at the end of the game is the pub quiz champion.

As with any game, whether at home or even in the pub, there is some quick setup needed before you can play. It’s quick and easy, although answering the questions is a lot tougher.

Split into two teams of players, it doesn’t matter if the teams aren’t entirely equal in player numbers. To get the best from the games, try and have a mix of ages, experience and abilities each time to try and cover as many questions/topics as possible and not load up one team with brainiacs (unless you’re all brainiacs of course). Each team is given an answer sheet, pencil and that all-important score chart (red or blue).

With the teams sorted, the arguing, I mean discussions, can start. What to name your team. No one wants boring team A and B or 1 and 2, so you and your team members get to discuss and come up with your own name, which you then write on the top of your answer pad.

Next up, again very important, get your drinks, nibbles and snacks sorted!

Finally, before play can begin, there is one more decision to be made. Each team is given a Joker. Jokers double the score in a chosen round, and as a team you get to choose your round. Teams take a look at the categories and choose the one that they would like to play their Joker in, picking one that they would expect to gain the most points in for maximum points advantage. With the category chosen, teams mark it off on their answer pad by ticking the Joker checkbox on next to their chosen category.

Let the quizzing begin!

A question card from each of the four decks is taken by one player to play with for the entire game. These are double-sided cards and cover the 8 categories. Each card has 5 questions on each side, giving a total of 40 questions over the course of the game. Each card is numbered and each category is a different colour. One player from either team should read the questions out loud, one at a time giving teams time to answer before moving on to the next question. Play starts with TV & Film (these cards are numbered 1-50), the order of categories is determined by the order on the answer pad. After each question is read out, teams should discuss their answer amongst themselves and when an agreement is made, write their answer on their answer pad. When both teams have their answer, move on to the next question.

Pub Quiz

When all 5 questions from a category have been asked and answered, teams swap their sheets (so no cheating occurs) and the answers checked. The answers can be found in the answer book by looking up the card number. Two points are awarded for a correct answer, one point for an “almost” right answer. Double points if that is your Joker category. Scores are marked on the answer pad. After each category has been scored the total score is transferred to the flip score chart.

After 8 rounds and 40 questions, the team with the highest score wins and is declared the pub quiz champions.

Overall, we think that Host Your Own Pub Quiz is an excellent challenging and fun trivia game for teenagers and adults (although we feel it is more suitable to adults). The varied mix of questions can be quite challenging so the game is better suited for a mix of age groups and experiences, as you would expect in a pub team.

We love that the answers to the questions are not on the cards as with a lot of quiz and trivia games, this reduces the chances of any cheating (reading through the cards beforehand) or “accidentally” seeing the answers on the cards. All the answers are located in the answer book and are found by looking up by card number and then question number.

The flip score charts are a nice touch with the visual element making it feel much more like a pub quiz than an at home trivia night. Plus they give the added bonus of increasing the tension when you can see just how close the scores are during the rounds.

With eight different categories to answer questions from, it covers a good mix of popular general knowledge topics and if you have assembled your teams well there should be topics that will get everybody involved and engaged with. Some of the questions can be quite difficult, which makes the game perfect for mixed abilities and discussion, without making the game too easy. It also makes team members talk to each other and decide on their best answer, an excellent game for social interaction.

With 40 questions, discussions and checking answers for scoring, the game can be quite lengthy, especially when teams are discussing their answers. We found it best to put a time limit on discussion time for team answers.

We think that Host Your Own Pub Quiz is an brilliant entertaining trivia game. With 2000 questions, there is lots of playability and replay value within the game.

Host Your Own Pub Quiz is a fantastic team trivia game. An excellent pub quiz without leaving the comfort of your own home. It has excellent game play with some great challenging questions and is a fantastic social and bonding experience.

So start brushing up on your general knowledge and Host Your Own Pub Quiz in the comfort of your own home. Become a pub quiz champion from the comfort of your own home.
