The murder mystery game of Cluedo has been around for a long time (76 years and counting) and the Cluedo Liars Edition introduces a fresh and exciting twist to the traditional game by incorporating a deception mechanic. Players can lie about the cards they hold, adding an extra layer of strategy and intrigue to the gameplay. This new twist keeps everyone on their toes, as you must decide when to trust your fellow players and when to call their bluff. Do you have the ability to read people and be a good detective?
The premise of Cluedo Liars Edition is that Dr Black has invited 6 people to the reopening of Tudor Mansion but is killed in cold blood. Now there are six suspects for the murder; Miss Scarlet, Dr Orchid, Rev. Green, Prof. Plum, Col. Mustard and Mrs Peacock. One of them is a killer and it is up to the players to decipher who did it, in what room did they commit the dastardly deed and with what weapon.
Before play can start, the board needs to be set up for murder, sorry playing. The Liar Button should already have the batteries installed, if not or they are dead, install them (2x AAA batteries are required). Place the game board, which features 9 different rooms of the mansion, in the centre of the playing area. Put the six character tokens in their starting positions in different rooms on the board, they are marked with each characters name. Place the 6 weapons randomly in different rooms. Place the Liar button in the centre of the board. Each player takes a reference card, which tells them what to do on their turn. Separate the cards so that you have the 12 Investigation cards, deal one to each player and place the rest face down on the centre of the board. Separate the Evidence cards so that you have a pile of Suspects, Weapons and Rooms and place them face down. Slide the top card from each of these decks, with no one seeing, and place them in the case file envelope then place the envelope under the Liar button. Shuffle the remaining Evidence cards and deal them to all the players, it doesn’t matter if not all players have the same amount of cards. Give each player a sheet from the notepad along with a pen or pencil. Each player secretly looks at their cards and marks them off on their notepad – don’t let the other players see your notepad, it’s private and confidential.
Note: if you are playing a two player game there are 2 changes which are outlined in the instructions.
To play, choose a character token (Miss Scarlet ALWAYS goes first). If no one is playing as Miss Scarlet the next player clockwise on the gameboard starts. Roll the die and follow the instructions on your reference card. As players move around rooms they gather evidence and make suggestions to who, what or where, marking off any evidence gathered on their notepads. It is pretty much the same game play as the classic Cluedo, except now you can play Truth or Lie cards. Play a Truth card and discard it on the pile but play a Lie card, if another player thinks that you are lying they can hit the Liar button, which makes a siren noise. If you are found out in a lie you must place one of your own Evidence card face up in a room so that ALL other players can see it and mark in off on their notepads, helping to further their investigation. If a player thinks you are lying when actually you were telling the truth you get to see an Evidence card of your choosing from that players hand, marking it off on your sheet without the other players seeing.
When a player has gathered enough evidence they can make an accusation. They then get to secretly look at the cards in the casefile. If they are correct they win. If they are wrong they put the cards back in the envelope and are out of the game apart from showing any of their evidence cards when required. Play continues until a player makes a correct accusation or each make has made a wrong accusation and are out of the game, leaving the murderer to get away with their crime.

Overall, Cluedo Liars Edition is just as good as the classic version of the game. For the most part it is played the same way but the Liar button adds in a fun new twist that keep players engaged and entertained. The lies and deception add in a nice extra dimension to the game, requiring players to think strategically and adapt their approach based on the information (or misinformation) they receive.
A fun game of deduction and deception, perfect for social gatherings and game nights. An excellent game that encourages players to communicate, collaborate, and compete with each other.
The Truth and Lie cards do take a little while to get used to, especially if you have played the classic game a lot, but it doesn’t take too long to get the hang of them.
If you’re a fan of Cluedo or simply love solving mysteries, this Cluedo Liars Edition is sure to provide hours of fun entertainment. Gather your fellow detectives, sharpen your wits, and get ready to uncover the truth, or the lies, within! Did Col. Mustard murder Dr Black in the library with the candlestick? The answer will be different every time, giving the game excellent re-play value.
