Monopoly Travel World Tour is a family-friendly board game for 2-4 players, aged 8+. Whilst it is similar to the classic game of Monopoly there are some changes and twists. Gone are buying houses and hotels for a start, they are replaced with paying for a tour guide. It features a dry-wipe game board that can be stamped with the self-inking playing tokens and travel journeys can be stamped along your journey to shape future games.
Before play can begin, one player must be chosen to be the Banker. The Banker is responsible for the Bank’s money, unowned Destination Cards, and overseeing auctions. The Banker also plays the game, but they must keep their money separate from the Bank’s money. When the Banker is chosen, they give each player 1500M; 10x 10M, 5x 20M, 2x 50M, 2x 100M and 2x 500M.
With each player receiving their cash, they must then each take a playing token, choosing from – T-Rex, Rubber Ducky, Dog (Scottie) or Cat (Hazel), and place it on the GO square on the board.
Then the golden travel ticket is placed on the Free Parking space. Shuffle the Travel Journal and Chance cards and place them on the corresponding spaces on the gameboard.
To determine who starts, each player rolls the dice. The player that rolls the highest number starts the game.
To start your Monopoly World Journey, no passport needed, the starting player rolls the two dice and moves that number of spaces clockwise on the board. The world travel adventure begins. The player will then take an action based on the space that they have landed on, allowing players to journey around the world, visiting famous landmarks and learning fun facts along the way.
The objective of Monopoly Travel World Tour is to travel to various destinations, complete travel goals, and collect stamps on your gameboard. Players take turns rolling the dice, moving their tokens, and purchasing destinations. Each destination comes with a travel goal that players must complete to earn stamps. The game also incorporates classic Monopoly elements, such as collecting rent and drawing Chance cards, but with a travel-themed twist.
Overall, Monopoly Travel World Tour is a refreshing and engaging take on the classic game with plenty of fun factor and educational elements. The travel theme adds an educational element, as players learn about different countries and landmarks while playing (the back of the cards have some excellent facts about each place). The dry-erase gameboard and stamping tokens make each game unique, creating lasting memories for future gameplay. The game is designed to be fast-paced, with each turn finishing quicker than in traditional Monopoly, making it perfect for family game nights.
We loved playing it and it is much faster than the traditional game with no buying of houses or hotels – this was missed initially but soon forgotten about, especially as our youngest player wanted to stamp as much as he could around the board.
It has the same playing fun as the traditional version but the board is a lot more colourful and the educational aspect is excellent for children and adults as it introduces players to world destinations that they might not have heard of before from various countries around the world and it informs players with some short facts on the back of each destination that you purchase.
The dry-erase gameboard and stamping tokens add a personalised touch to each game, which appeals more to the children but is fun to try and reach all your goals and see where you have visited.
Although it has slightly different rules and gameplay, these are quickly learned and the more games you play the better it is – although I would recommend reading the instructions thoroughly before play as we accidentally stamped one of our destination cards and it is permanent (only the game board can be wiped clean).
For me, the only downside was that the money is really small cardboard pieces. It feels more durable than the paper notes usually associated with Monopoly games but can be hard and fiddly to pick up – although some of our other players, once they got over how small it was, actually liked it once they got accustomed to it. Personally I would still prefer the larger paper notes.
Monopoly Travel World Tour is a fantastic addition to the Monopoly family. It offers a fresh and exciting twist on the classic game. Its combination of travel-themed elements, educational value, and fast-paced gameplay makes it a hit for players of all ages. Whether you’re a seasoned Monopoly fan or new to the game, this edition is sure to provide hours of fun and adventure.
